Catholicity

I get this daily email called Wordsmith. Generally, the words are edifying and unusual. Today's word makes me frown and scratch my head, however.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
catholicity (kath-uh-LIS-i-tee) adjective
1. Wide-ranging; universality.
2. Broad-mindedness; inclusiveness.
[From Latin catholicus, from Greek katholikos (general),
from kata (according to, by) + holou (whole).]
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Forgive me for saying so, but it strikes me as odd that a word, which looks and sounds so much like Catholic, actually means universality and broad-minded inclusiveness.

Bert! Surely a bright woman like you is not arguing that a faith that claims followers ranging from William F. Buckley to Andrew Sullivan lacks broadmindedness? You are not claiming that a religion that is adding new followers around the world at a dizzying pace, produced the Borgia popes and Martin Luther, inspired geniuses across several continents to create much of the art in the photos on your website, and performs an incredible amount of charitable work on behalf of AIDS victims as well as an incredible, DIVERSE array of other needy people lacks inclusiveness?
feel free to flame away on me-I can take it.-DJ

DJ! My favorite Catholic! You are Catholic, yes? Oh, sweetie, I was not, by any means, implying that all people who practice the Catholic religion are closed-minded. I was, instead, referring to the wide-spread reputation that Catholicism, and organized religion in general, for that matter, have for exclusion and judgement. After all, it wouldn't be religion without judegment, now would it? ;)

And I'm glad you can take my flames. Miss you. Say "hi" to the midwest and your Mamazilla for me. -B :)
